About Us

Manufacturing Automation Laboratories (MAL) Inc. was founded in 1996 by Professor Yusuf Altintas - Professor of the Mechanical Engineering and Director of Manufacturing Automation Laboratory at the University of British Columbia - to disseminate his research algorithms and knowledge to machining industry.
In his view, the area of machine tools, metal cutting, computer numerically controlled (CNC), computer-aided manufacturing ( CAM ) and sensor-assisted intelligent machining are quite wide; each requires an academic and engineering experience to understand a manufacturing operation that uses all of them in an integrated fashion. In terms of metal cutting - one of the most widely used manufacturing processes to produce the final shape of products - its technology continues to advance in parallel with development in materials, computers and sensors. A blank is converted into a final product by cutting extra material away with turning, drilling, milling, broaching, boring and grinding operations conducted on Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machine tools.
The result of his work is embedded in two machining science software masterpieces: CutPro and ShopPro which features advanced machining process simulation software, open CNC machine tool & robot control software and sensor based machining process control & monitoring programs. Here, mathematics, physics, computers, software packages and instrumentation become useful integration tools in analyzing or designing machine tools and machining processes.
CutPro has been developed at the Manufacturing Automation Laboratory under the supervision of Professor Altintas; and is owned by the University of British Columbia and distributed by MAL Inc. under a licensing agreement. ShopPro has been developed by MAL Inc. CutPro and ShopPro products are trademark and copyright protected.
